History of Grama Panchayat
Ambalappara Panchayat was formed in 1962 by combining the regions of Ambalappara I and II villages, pursuant to G.O. (MS) No. 814/62. Following the panchayat rules, an election was held in this 10-ward panchayat to constitute its first governing body. The people residing in this area were previously under the control of upper-caste feudal lords and chieftains. This region was subject to the Rajas of Valluvanad—who were prominent vassals of the Zamorin kings—and later to the British. This place has an abundance of both temples and rocks, which is widely believed to be why the village got the name "Ambalappara."
Key figures who participated in the Indian freedom struggle as members of the INA (Indian National Army) include Varikuzhiyil Narayanan Nair, Nellikunhath Ayyappan, Kelathodi Raman, and Chakkottil Ramappanicker. The cultural heritage of this panchayat is closely linked to Jain culture. There are numerous places of worship in this panchayat, including 8 temples and 8 mosques located across Ambalappara, Murukkumpatta, and Vengasseri as part of its cultural heritage. The principal place of worship for the Christian community is the church at Kadambur. All the major cultural festivals of the village are tied to these places of worship. Festivals such as Muthalappara Pooram, Panayurkavu Pooram, and the poorams at Vazhanikkavu and Vayankavu hold great significance due to large public gatherings.
Reading rooms and libraries operating in various wards serve as another cultural hub of the village. The prominent centers among these are the Chunangad Vayanasala, Yuvarashmi Arts & Sports Club, and Pilathara Ambedkar Memorial Vayanasala. The Ambalappara PHC (Primary Health Centre), which started as a dispensary in 1962 and was later upgraded to a primary health centre, is the main healthcare institution in the panchayat. In the government sector, there are two hospitals for Homeopathy and Ayurveda located in Kadambur and Murukkumpatta. Hospitals in the private sector provide ambulance services, namely Aswini Hospital, Valluvanad Hospital, and Seventh Day Hospital. A government veterinary dispensary operates in the panchayat for animal husbandry.
